Ten thousand square feet, built to take what the crane can lift.

A plant manager with a burned motor on a pallet does not want a pitch. He wants to know if the crane will pick it up, if the oven will take it, and if the stand can run it at voltage afterwards. This building has been answering that question since the expansion went into production in October 2015, west of the shop it replaced.

What fits through the door

A drive-through bay, so nothing has to be backed out.

A flatbed can pull in one end of the bay and out the other, which matters when the load is a motor too heavy to walk on a pallet jack. The crane runway runs the length of the floor above it, rated to fifteen tons, which is also the working ceiling on any AC or DC motor Bestway takes in for rewinding and rebuilding or for the pump work that comes off it.

Once a rebuild is finished, it does not get proved on the same floor it was stripped on. The isolated testing area sits apart from the rest of the shop, on its own six by twelve foot bedplate, so a no-load run to 4160 volts and the bearing temperature and balance readings that go with it are not fighting the vibration of whatever else is on the floor that day.

Ovens and finishing

The old winding comes out in the burnout oven, which is sized to a controlled burn rather than a torch or a cold strip that stresses the core. New coils go in, get laced, and the stack goes through the larger capacity varnish tank before the bake oven cures the insulation system at the size and duration it is rated for. Both ovens were sized in the 2015 expansion for whatever the crane next door can set inside them.

Before a rebuild goes back out, the housing goes through an environmentally safe power washing facility to clear grease and shop grime, then into an environmentally safe dust and paint booth so the finish goes on clean. It is the same standard the shop holds on the electrical side, where the rebuild is done to EASA Standard AR100-2015 and nothing ships without a written record of how it ran on the stand.

The shop does not close when the motor stops.

Regular hours are mon-fri 7am-4pm, but the crane, the ovens and the test stand back a 24 hour emergency service, because a plant does not choose the hour its motor burns out. When it cannot come to Campbell Avenue at all, the same floor stands behind the trucks that go out to site instead.
